Where is the ideal place to buy patio doors from?
I need a new sliding(gliding) patio door. I live in Chicago suburbs and I've been to Menards, Lowes, and Home Depot but their prices are somewhat out of my range.
Does anyone know a good place to buy patio doors from? Something that's not very expensive (around $500). Are there any direct outlets that sell patio doors for less than hardware stores?

If you're a qualified carpenter/contractor that understands framing, siding, and know how to build stairs, no. but by your questions, I'm thinking that you're not up to this task. First, you want a minimum 5' foot wide door and your existing window is not that wide. This will require cutting out a wider section of the exterior wall and installing a sufficient header and cripple support studs. I can't speak for Canadian Realtors, but my agent would like me putting exterior doors out of bedroom because it would hurt my resale value. Many people are security conscience and do not feel safe with an exterior door in a bedroom. Good luck.

If cost is an issue we found Lowe's and Home Depot to be price competitive, they also offer installation which can be useful. Other then that the weekly ad papers such as thrifty nickel and penny saver often have classified ads for used and surplus doors.
